You may be battling terrorism in the AfPak border, but what have you done to address our concerns on terrorism?

Maroof Raza (Retired Indian Army Officer - Expert)

All political parties must be blamed for making Burhan Wani an icon, for destroying peace in J&K

I take umbrage to someone suggesting we were reluctant. No way. The air force is always willing to do its bit. And we know it is the telling part. But I did make the point that if air power has to be used you cannot suggest what is to be used.

Anil Yashwant Tipnis (Served as Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force)

Because air power means escalation of the war. And we have to be prepared. I had to activate my air defence all round not only for the air-fields but for industrial and strategic complexes in the country.

I felt strong sympathy for the Army Headquarters staff. Having been caught off guard in the field, they were unable to make up for their initial lapse due to inadequate intelligence and possibly indifferent involvement from the command headquarters.

Anil Yashwant Tipnis (Served as Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force)

I observed that the ground situation was grave. Army required Air Force help to evict the intruders. Army Headquarters was reluctant, possibly because it was embarrassed to have allowed the present situation to develop, to reveal the full gravity of the situation to [the Ministry of Defence]

It was more or less universally accepted perhaps grudgingly not openly in some Indian quarters that to serve the dubious purpose of political survival that Pandit Nehru with his grandiose vision of a conflict free non-alligned world surrendered vital national security interest to the ambition of being a world leader

Ahuja might have survived if his aircraft had CMDS (counter-measures dispensing system) that the DRDO and a public sector company was supposed to supply to us. The Stinger (surface-to-air) missile hit the fairing of his aircraft.

We practically started operational flying without any R & O (reconnaissance and observation). The army could not tell us where the enemy is or who the enemy was

Just a few years ago when the Kargil incursion took place, they denied in totality, going so far as not to even claim the dead bodies of their soldiers killed in action. This is the worst thing that any soldier can do and this is what the army chief did to his soldier. I believe that he (Musharraf) can tell any lie.

Anil Yashwant Tipnis (Served as Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force)

Well, when Musharraf talks, one doesn’t know what to take. Because Musharraf has lied, I think not only to India, he has lied to his own government, lied to his own army, he has lied to his people.

The use of air power in response to heinous acts or terrorist attacks is an option that is to be taken by the government. IAF is prepared for any eventuality.

Birender Singh Dhanoa (Air Force)

The Indian policy to tackle internal security situations does not envisage the use of kinetic means of force application on our citizens through the medium of air. Thus, our roles are restricted to providing intelligence and surveillance to forces on the ground.

Birender Singh Dhanoa (Air Force)

It is akin to a cricket team playing with seven players instead of 11.

Though we are operating under challenging conditions, we have devised mitigating strategies.
