I started on VisiCalc in June of 1980 - I actually worked for Atari briefly, when I was finishing up college. I ended up spending more in the company store than I made in income, so it's probably a good thing I moved on. Atari at that time was owned by Warner, so you could buy all the music albums for like a dollar.

Today, I don't get a lot of interest in running Word over the internet. Bandwidth is precious, and most people have Office. Nobody's crystal ball is perfect, but I think in a few years those who say software is dead will go the way of those people who said PCs were dead and network computing was the thing.

At the end of the day, my point of view is give the customer the choice. Sell them on the value of Exchange as a messaging system and let them choose if they want it on the premises or have someone run it for them as a service.

I might articulate it a little differently. I would certainly say that I had earned the respect of Bill and Steve, and Bill will listen to people who have a point of view. Even though Bill will frequently have a strong point of view, he enjoys the intellectual debate, and I’m comfortable with that too.

My wife and I have been quite involved in philanthropy for many years, but I didn’t work full time in philanthropy before this role. I know that one of the things Bill and Melinda were looking for was somebody whom they could work with effectively. They need to have somebody who can be a great collaborator with them as they define and refine the strategies of the foundation.

One of the things you learn as CEO, there’s an expression that there is no long-term without the short-term. And you really have to pay attention to both.

Don’t think too far ahead. Be willing to try something new. You can take some changes and do some experimentation.

My hope is that as Congress and the new administration considers possible changes in the law, they will closely consult with the patient groups, physicians, providers, and other participants in our very complex healthcare system so as to develop solutions that are in the best interests of patients and taxpayers.

Now that we are about to complete a full year of operating Pfizer and Wyeth together, with our world-class team fully in place, I have concluded the time is right to turn the leadersip of the company over to Ian Read

Nobody is immune from the impact of a recession, and we certainly are not immune, nor is our sector. Unfortunately people continue to have medical conditions and sickness regardless of the economic circumstances and consequently there's a degree to which we may not be as affected as other people would be.

We're not as competitive as we used to be. Clearly we have been seeing in recent years that some of the emerging markets like China and India have become much more competitive at encouraging people to go into the sciences and educating them to do so.

A designer needs to have a base to operate from; especially for bridals and formals, people prefer to interact and discuss their clothes in detail with the designer.
