People may believe that climbing mountains is risky for girls. My uncle is in the army, so it has been a norm for my family to go to the mountains every summer vacation. It would never have been possible for me to do a 9-5 job.

That's because when I am on a climb, there's absolutely no one to talk to for days except my guide with whom I exchange a few clinical words while deciding the progress of the climb.

I am so glad my parents understood my passion. They have supported me throughout. It’s actually my family who took the risk of taking up a loan of Rs 30 lakh from the bank so that I could climb Mt Everest.

Let me clarify. The double 'a' in my name has got nothing to with numerology. Lord Krishna gave this name to Draupadi with love.

This year, if there’s one significant change to our expedition, then it’s our preparedness. We’ve made sure that our logistics are in place and come what may, we’re definitely going to summit Makalu this time.

I am delighted to announce my summit of Makalu Monday morning. I am overcome with emotions because this mountain has denied me thrice in a row and it is an accomplishment to stand on top of it after a struggle.

Our main motive is to climb. The film is just a byproduct of the climb. But having said that, the film is equally important to us because every year we come back and then fret about it. We want people to know the actual hardships that we go through. We want to show people that it’s not just the physical aspect, there’s also a lot of mental challenge that goes into it.

Fundamentally, anyone with money can climb Everest. And that’s what happened then [2010]. They pay a ton and it’s a great story to tell everyone. But that’s what they thought. Sadly, a lot of them died.

I come from a very poor family. My father and mother are agricultural labourers who spend hours in the fields trying to make ends meet. Both of them together earn Rs 3,000 every month.

I shall always think big and aim high. I was scared. But at the time, I remembered my parents, my teachers. I wanted to complete the dream of my secretary, Praveen Kumar.

Climbing the Everest was certainly more difficult than i thought — but my willpower to prove that a tribal girl can do something kept me going.
