Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world that I ever climbed, but I must tell you that there is a distinction between ‘highest’ and ‘tallest’ peaks. The highest mountain is determined by measuring a mountain’s highest point above sea level. The tallest mountain is measured from base to summit.

I became a mountaineer by fluke. I was born in a village called Joniawas in Haryana in an affluent family that wanted to get me married at 14, as that was the norm then. I decided to stay in a hostel in Jaipur and continue with my studies to escape family attention. From my hostel room, I could see the Aravalli range. It fascinated me.

If you yearn for something without wistfulness but with happiness and faith, it comes to you. That’s what pulled me through every situation and kept me going is good health. That comes from the state of mind

I think about different things most of the time. I was at peace when I reached the top of Everest. I wasn’t very excited.

The journey between thinking about it and doing it was very short.

I thought of climbing Everest in November 2008, and in May 2009 I was climbing it.

Sponsors don't find it lucrative to put their money into mountaineering. It's not a very popular sport.

People may believe that climbing mountains is risky for girls. My uncle is in the army, so it has been a norm for my family to go to the mountains every summer vacation. It would never have been possible for me to do a 9-5 job.

That's because when I am on a climb, there's absolutely no one to talk to for days except my guide with whom I exchange a few clinical words while deciding the progress of the climb.

I am so glad my parents understood my passion. They have supported me throughout. It’s actually my family who took the risk of taking up a loan of Rs 30 lakh from the bank so that I could climb Mt Everest.

Let me clarify. The double 'a' in my name has got nothing to with numerology. Lord Krishna gave this name to Draupadi with love.

This year, if there’s one significant change to our expedition, then it’s our preparedness. We’ve made sure that our logistics are in place and come what may, we’re definitely going to summit Makalu this time.

I am delighted to announce my summit of Makalu Monday morning. I am overcome with emotions because this mountain has denied me thrice in a row and it is an accomplishment to stand on top of it after a struggle.

I went on a mountain climbing trip when I was 10 during a vacation to the hilly outback of Pune in Western India to meet my grandmother.

Our main motive is to climb. The film is just a byproduct of the climb. But having said that, the film is equally important to us because every year we come back and then fret about it. We want people to know the actual hardships that we go through. We want to show people that it’s not just the physical aspect, there’s also a lot of mental challenge that goes into it.
