I was a very good sports person. However, growing up, my first priority was completing my education.

While I was in the hospital recovering from the big accident, I decided to climb Mount Everest. Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who has successfully battled cancer, motivated me to do something with my life and inspired me.

Being a girl from a small village from Uttarkashi, I had worked hard to get an education for myself, and had always put academics before my love for sport. Hence, people wondered why I would throw that away to climb a mountain!

You know, when I first expressed the desire to become a professional mountaineer, the objection that my family, relatives, and the people around me raised was that mountaineering is not something women should ever think of. According to them, the only profession women should take up --- if at all they insist on working-- is that of a school teacher.

Many people suffer from a misconception that mountaineering is just climbing and descending mountains with a rucksack. Well, it is much, much more. Any person who has had some experience in this will tell you how the adventure toughens a person, both mentally and physically.

I am extremely proud to have accomplished this achievement on behalf of my country and all the women who live here with courage and determination. This experience has again taught me that if you have the will and focus, no matter where you come from, you can conquer the world.
